How to appear in the Inline Google Image Results

Have you ever wondered how to appear in the Google Inline Image results? If so here is some information for you.

Google Inline Image results are the three images that appear at the top of certain Google searches, usually containing the phrase 'pictures [subject]', 'pics [subject]', 'images [subject]', and for some other queries such as 'map of [subject]'.

Looking into this I couldn't find any information on how to appear within these results.

Google say the following:

How does image search work?

Google analyzes the text on the page adjacent to the image, the image caption and dozens of other factors to determine the image content. Google also uses sophisticated algorithms to remove duplicates and ensure that the highest quality images are presented first in your results.

Having looked at a number of these results it appears they do the following:

  1. Show one image from a page about the search query
  2. Show one image with an alt text that contains the search query
  3. Show one image where the title, headline and alt text all contain the search query

Google also seems to take into account the name of the image, so if you want something to show up for New York Map the picture name should be new_york_map.jpg or new.york.map.gif.

What I found interesting was clicking on the ‘more images’ button brought up a slew of results, usually missing the one entry that didn’t have the search term in the alt text (see numbered list).

Of course every fourth query brings up something that totally defies all the above. For example, 'pictures of focus' brings up 2 images of the Ford Focus (so far so good) and then the more images tab doesn't show any of the Ford Focus pictures. Is that a hand coded fluke?

So Google Inline Images can help to get your content directly in front of searchers eyes. The image should be eye-catching and make people want to find out more about the image and where it came from. The landing page that hosts the image should include provocative information and a ‘call to action.’ This is another tool to get targeted traffic to your site.
